Because It's Personal

A lot of people are pissed at me today. I've been pretty brittle. I'm not handling this very coolly. I'm ruining people's fun. Whenever I've seen or heard sentiments of celebration , I've made it a point to interject:

"What a great night!" someone says.
"Not for gays," I reply.

Would it be so hard for people to acknowledge that? And why do I keep hearing the words I had no idea? You should have known. Stop patting yourself on the back.

There's no reason for the defeat of gay rights to detract from the historic victory that occurred yesterday. That's simply not where my head is, where my heart is. And, frankly, I don't think it's disrespectful to keep pointing it out.

It isn't disrespectful to point it out. It is disrespectful of the ignorant. My heart is so sad. I am disheartened that in AZ the voters got fooled (we voted down the SAME measure 2 years ago) and Arkansas, well sheesh...that makes me ill.
I woke up this morning, feeling full, knowing as a woman, for the next 4 years, my right to choose is safe. But for my friends and many others they lost rights that are uncomprehendable to me. I am sorry.

you shouldn't feel bad. you have every right to be disappointed and i am glad you are sharing it with people. it's further reinforcement of the fact that while we all hope for change ahead, there is such a lot of work to be done, very many inequalities still, not only exist, but are rampant and accepted.

I agree. It's not disrespectful. It shows that while one barrier may have been broken, we still have a LONG way to go. The work is not done yet...

We shouldn't even have to vote on something like that. Discrimination should be illegal. Plain and simple. I don't see how gay marriage is much different from interracial marriage. Interracial marriage used to be illegal, which is ridiculous. People will keep fighting this. I'm convinced. Eventually, there will be equal marriage rights. You'd just think that in this day and age it wouldn't be such an issue.

So keep telling people.

My coworker asked when I walked in if it was a bittersweet day, I said no, it's pretty much just bitter.

We are not detracting from this historic victory; I'm sorry but this victory will be forever stained by the fact that an astounding 70% of blacks in California voted to strip me of my marriage, and had they trended with the rest of the Democrats we would have won. Seventy percent! The community that we are supposed to be proud for just used the power of democracy to deny me equal protection under the law. It isn't only ironic, it's disgusting.

And the real tragic figures in all this are the gay and lesbian African-Americans. It is high time that the pussy ass white liberal elite stand up to what is unilaterally the most homophobic demographic in the country.

I am so very sad about the results of the vote on Prop 8 and it will be a long time before I can enjoy the success of the presidential election when so many abuses of fundamental human rights were passed yesterday. I'm not American, I'm not gay, I do feel let down and sickened by the results of the election and my heart goes out to every LGBTQ person in America who has been let down.
